Biography

Walter Dale Miller was a rancher from Viewfield in Meade County, South Dakota. He served for 20 years as a school board member and was a leader in the Republican Party. In 1966 he was elected to the South Dakota House of Representatives where he served until 1986. He is the only person in the history of the state to serve as Majority Leader, Assistant Majority Leader, Majority Whip, Speaker of the House, Speaker Pro Tempore, and President of the Senate.

In 1986, gubernatorial candidate George S. Mickelson selected Miller to be his running mate. They won that election, and Miller became the state's first full-time Lieutenant Governor in January 1987. When Governor Mickelson died in a plane crash on April 20, 1993, Miller was the first Lieutenant Governor in South Dakota's history to succeed to the governorship upon the death of his predecessor. At 67, he was also the oldest governor in state history. Miller left state government in 1995 after losing the Republican gubernatorial primary to Bill Janklow.
