Content Description

The collection consists of a written history, newsletters, publications, news clippings, and campaign materials relating to the Black Hills Energy Coalition. The Black Hills Energy Coalition (BHEC) formed in the late summer of 1977. Its members were generally concerned with threats, posed by energy development, to the land and water of the Black Hills. Uranium mining, in particular, was an increasing focus of attention for the group. BHEC members approached county governments and the South Dakota legislature to find ways to minimize uranium mining’s impacts, but with little success. In July 1979, the Black Hills Energy Coalition took two major steps: it began publication of a newsletter, called The Shaft; and, it commenced a ballot initiative drive to place a measure on the 1980 election ballot.
