The collection consists of 5 journals written by David D. Keeler. Keeler was a surveyor based out of Yankton, SD. The journals cover Keeler and his surveying party’s travels through early Dakota Territory and western Minnesota. The journals dates are as follows: Journal 1: July 18, 1871- Sept 28, 1871. Journal 2: July 25, 1872 – Oct 12 1872 Journal 3: May 12, 1874 – July 17, 1874 Journal 4: July 18, 1874-Sept. 10, 1874 Journal 5: Field Notes – 1874-1875 Notations of Keeler and his journals can be found in the History Collections vol. 24 pages: 305, 312, & 313. Further mention of Keeler is found in Wright Tarbell’s “The early and territorial history of Codington county,” History Collections, vol. 24, pages 276-469. The collection also includes a transcript of the diaries. The transcripts were saved digitally and processed in accordance with the Archives' digital preservation rules.
