The collection consists of several folders of research material compiled by Carol Jennings for her article titled, "'Camped on a splendid Prairie': The 1872 Eastern Dakota Survey Journal of David D. Keeler" in the Vol. 42, No.1 Spring 2012 issue of South Dakota History. The original David Keeler journals (H2006-035) are held at the South Dakota State Archives. Keeler was a surveyor based out of Yankton, SD. The journals cover Keeler and his surveying party’s travels through early Dakota Territory and western Minnesota. The research folders include materials such as transcripts of the Keeler journals, research reference materials, census information, postmaster appointment, Bureau of Land Management and City Directory data, information on homesteaders mentioned in the journals, Joel B. Montgomery (Keeler’s friend), Field Notes from 1871, 1872, and 1874, information on other surveyors, maps, pictures, and surveying history in Dakota Territory. Accretion to H2006-035
