Content Description

The collection contains World War II era letters from Steve A. Cihak to Mary Paul from December 1941 to January 1946. The collection contains 558 letters most of which were written by Steve Cihak. The letters give details of Steve’s time in the army from basic training across the United States to his deployment in North Africa and Italy. Along with day to day army activities, the letters also describe events back in South Dakota and the United States in general. The letters are comprised of regular air mail letters, V-mail, Western Union Telegrams and postcards. Two photos were added to the original collection shortly after the letters were accessioned. One photo is of Steve Cihak taken in 1942. The other photo is of Steve and Mary on their wedding day. A database of the letters was also created and is found in the collection and on the archives N: drive.
