Content Description
The collection consists of one hundred and twenty three postcards transferred from Eagle Public Library in Eagle, CO. The collection comprises mostly of real photo postcards but also includes color tinted cards. The main topics are rodeos and towns, along with other South Dakota related images. The rodeo images include horse and bull riding, bulldogging, bare back riding, cow girls, and trick ropers/riders. Identified South Dakota rodeo images include Tri-State Roundup (Belle Fourche, S.D.), Ruskin Park (S.D.), Interior (S.D.), and Buffalo, (S.D.). Other rodeo images were taken at Cheyenne Frontier Days, Ada (OK), and New Castle (WY). Town postcards include Watertown (S.D.), Sioux Falls (S.D.), Mitchell (S.D.), Huron (S.D.), Lead (S.D.), Deadwood (S.D.), Madison (S.D.), Aberdeen (S.D.), Spearfish (S.D.), Belle Fourche (S.D.), Hot Springs (S.D.), and Buffalo (S.D.). Scenic images include the Badlands, Black Hills, Spearfish Falls, Spearfish Canyon, Standby Viaduct near Rochford (S.D.), Needles Highway, Mount Rushmore, and White Rocks near Deadwood (S.D.). Other miscellaneous images feature Scotty Philip’s Buffalo Herd, Deer hunting near Buffalo (S.D.), Got skinned in Camp Crook, Freighting to the Black Hills, Lincoln’s Ranch (Aberdeen, S.D.), Shocking wheat in South Dakota, the Deadwood Stage Coach, new settlers breaking ground, a train wreck near Mitchell, Buffalo Bill at Wild Bill Hickok’s grave, Wild Bill Hickok, Don’t Know Him (Yankton Sioux Chief), a man with two horses, and a postcard advertisement for the South Dakota State Fair in Sioux Falls (S.D.) in September 1891. Also with the collection box 3456C has a business card for Gray’s Photo Studio (Watertown, S.D.) and an oversized postcard of the campus at State College (Brooking, S.D.). Box 3536B contains an oversized panoramic postcard image of Lead (S.D.).
