Content Description

The collection consists of two original maps of Dakota Territory. The first map is titled, “Map of a Reconnaissance of the Black Hills.,” The map shows the route taken by the 7th Cavalry under the command of Lt. Col. George A. Custer, from July and August 1874, drawn by Captain William Ludlow, Corps of Engineers. The second map is titled, “A Geological Map of the Black Hills,” by Professor N. H. Winchell. The map accompanied the report made by Captain William Ludlow, U.S. Engineers. Both maps are original copies and depict the early exploration into the Black Hills region of Dakota Territory in the 1870s.
