Content Description

This collection consists of a copy of a compilation entitled, “James R. Sorenson in World War I and World War II.” This booklet is a typescript of the original journals that includes maps, photographs and additional family genealogical information. The original journals are in poor condition and the donors’ family retained the originals. This booklet was created by the family, particularly James C. Sorenson, in order that all the family and anyone interested might know of James R. Sorenson’s military career. The first version of the compilation was prepared in 1988-1989. The 2004 version contains clarification of facts as new information became available and a better quality booklet. James R. Sorenson’s family lived in various locations in South Dakota including Viborg, Centerville, and Springfield. James (Rudy) entered the army in 1917 during World War I while still attending high school in Springfield. After the war James returned home, finished high school, completed a college degree in Civil Engineering, got married, and had several jobs in South Dakota, Texas, Missouri, North Dakota, and Nebraska. James also served during World War II. James kept journals during his military service that recorded daily events. James was born in either September 1, 1896 or 1898 and he died in 1983. These journals and photographs were used to compile this booklet on James R. Sorenson’s military career.
