Content Description

The collection consists of various items relating to the children of the Nels and Thea Hanson family who lived near Seneca (S.D.). A booklet titled, “The Nels and Thea Hanson Family History” offers a more detailed description of the entire Hanson family. The family moved from Wisconsin to a farm near Seneca in 1907. The fourteen children of Nels and Thea include Francis, Nellie, Nora, Mabel, Thelma, Schuyler, Delia, Tinus, Emily, Raymond, Glen, Tillman, and Ralph as well as one child Rosa who died as an infant. Featured with the collection is a photo album of over two hundred and seventy images relating to the Hanson family. The photos were numbered and some identified (a sheet of those identified will be placed with the accession paperwork). The images date roughly to the 1910s and 1920s and include family scenes and World War I era soldiers in uniform. Most of the images are from Wisconsin but there are South Dakota and some Seneca (S.D.) images scattered throughout the photo album. There also appears to be a photo of Medicine Rock (#162). The photo album is in FB 648. A number of other miscellaneous family items are also in the collection including a marriage certificate for Schuyler Hanson and Anna Vondra, two certificates of baptism for Anna Vondra, Certificate of Promotion from seventh grade Hyde County public schools for Anna Vondra (FB 649), Raymond and Schuyler Hanson baptismal certificates, and a confirmation certificate for Raymond Hanson. Also included are a photograph and military records for Lawrence Brown. Lawrence served with the United States Army, 81st “Wildcat” Infantry Division during World War II. Included are an 81st “Wildcat” poster (MD 116) and informational magazine (FB 649) including a certificate, with photo, for Mr. Brown. The photograph is of Lawrence and Margaret (Hanson) Brown. Postcards from World War I and World War II are also in the collection (8535E). The postcards feature various World War I era military scenes. The World War II era images are mainly of Glasgow (Scotland) and Loch Lomond (Scotland). The World War II images were compiled by Howard Hanson. The collection also includes four yearbooks (Senedak) from the Seneca High School dated 1936-1939. The yearbook contains original photographs of students, the high school, and some staff. Also featured are photos of activities and sports including boys and girls basketball and baseball. Accretion to H2008-029
