Content Description

This collection consists of fourteen postcards and two photographs. Postcards: Night scene of the State Capitol, Busting a bronco, saddling a bronco, Prairie Rose, Tommy Douglas take a joy ride (Going photo, 1917), two women standing by a gate laughing, two male Indians in a formal portrait, three young male Indians standing near a tipi, three young Indian children in a formal portrait, two women one seated the other standing, two Indian women leaning against building, Indian women in Indian dress (2 copies), two Indian women leaning against a brick building, and group of young Indian girls wearing school uniforms playing a game. Photographs: 4 ¼ x 6 ½ cabinet card of three Indian children. Photographer was M.E. Burgess of Chamberlain, S.D. The smallest child in the center of the photograph has an x marked over his head. The reverse of the photograph has the following information. “Mr. Ed P.H. Ashley, Grosse, S.Dak. 6 miles northeast of Grosse ------ creek. Pastel bust to -----Have dark brown eyes brown cape light varnish----- stripes of blood --- buttons white.” Some of the words are indiscernible because an additional layer of paper (envelope flap) has adhered to the photograph. 3 ¾ x 5 ½ cabinet card of one male Indian in full Indian dress. No photographer noted. Other items donated at the same time: Marriage license between Arrow and Bright Eyes, 1907 was added to H99-081 The Pierre Indian School, Dakota Days Book was added to the yearbook collection Wakan Cekiye Odowan, 1946 was added to the library. Five photographs of Fort Yates images were forwarded to the North Dakota State Historical Society
