Content Description
The collection consists of various items relating to the Anderson family, and general history, of Perkins County from the homesteading era of the 1910s. Included are transcribed oral history accounts, from audiocassette tapes, of Ray Anderson, Agnes (Larson) Anderson, Edna (Larson) Jerde, and Ida (Larson) Jerde. Titles for the transcripts include: Ray Anderson, early history living in Bison; Ray Anderson, World War II memories; Agnes Larson Anderson and her sister Edna Larson Jerde memories of childhood games and parties; Agnes Larson Anderson memories of growing up at Zeona SD on the ranch; Agnes Larson Anderson memories of rural school teaching and her tenure as Co. Supt. of Schools in Perkins County; Ida Larson Jerde memories of coming to the homestead in 1912 and settling down. Also featured is a small booklet with handwritten recipes, and newspaper clipping recipes, belonging to Joseph Bruce Foster. Mr. Foster homesteaded in Perkins County and was the great grandfather of the donor. Examples of recipes include cakes, cookies, pickles, and curing meats. The booklet also includes some account information. The collection also contains two maps titled “Short Grass Country Ranch Map” and “Texas Trails Map.” The “Short Grass Country Ranch Map” shows the area of western South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska as well as Wyoming, Montana, and parts of southern Canada. The map shows the location of various ranches and brands for those ranches. The “Texas Trails Map” shows cattle trails from Texas to Canada. The collection includes World War II ration booklets and stamps for the Anderson family in Bison (S.D.), Perkins County. As well as a comb bound booklet highlighting the service of Frank Anderson titled “China-Burma-India Theatre 1943-1945, diaries and letters of Frank Raymond Anderson.” A comb bound booklet titled, “Ramblin’ with Jean” by Jean Simmons is also included in the manuscript collection. The booklet features various anecdotes of life in Perkins County from roughly the 1910s to 1940s. The book Memories to Share by Benna (Larson) Jerde was added to the Library collection. (8/11/2014) A laminated letter written from Bison (S.D.) to Frank while serving during WWII in India (Nov 30, 1943) was donated at a later date and added to box 4836C. Photographs are also seen with the letter. A transcript of the letter was included.
