Content Description

The collection consists of two (3 ½” x 11 ½”) photographs of images taken along the Needles Highway in the Black Hills of South Dakota in the 1920s. The first image is titled, “The Switzerland of South Dakota, elevation approximately 7000 feet.” Places identified, by number, include the switchback, Custer (S.D.) and granite needles. The second image is specifically of the “Switchback” on the Needles Highway. The images are attributed to photographer Art Lease (Lead, S.D.) and were framed by the Dayton Company picture galleries of Minneapolis.
