Content Description

The collection consists of photographs and postcards that were held in one frame (out of three total frames) at the Brule County Courthouse. The framed images were donated in 1961 by Mr. and Mrs. Blakely King in memory of Mr. King’s grandfather Captain Henry J. King, a Missouri River boatman during the early days of Chamberlain. Some of the forty five images in the collection include: early Chamberlain, Missouri River scenes, Fireman’s Tournament at Chamberlain, reenactment of Custer’s Last Stand, various steamboat landings, the first train across Missouri River at Chamberlain, a pool hall at Chamberlain, and the engine room of a Steamboat. Steamboats in the collection include: Ada Belle, L.R.K, South Dakota, Iowa, S.W. Sanford, Last Chance, General Meade, General Terry, Nellie Peck, Milwaukee, Mollie Moose, Washburn, Bachelor, and Oleander. The frames were brought to the State Archives by Marrianne Lindley Girten of Chamberlain. The images were removed from the frames, sorted, catalogued, and scanned. A copy of the scans will be sent along with reprinted images to the Brule County Courthouse.
