The collection consists of a diary and various military papers of Charles Lee Hyde of Pierre. Charles Hyde enlisted on November 9, 1917 at Fort Omaha, Nebraska. He was twenty five years old at enlistment and listed his occupation as lawyer. Mr. Hyde was honorably discharged as a Private, First Class, Flying Cadet in the Army Air Service. Charles Hyde’s diary is dated from January 1, 1918 to April 11, 1918. The diary was written during Hyde’s time at Camp Fremont in Palo Alto, CA and his aeronautics training at Ellington Field in Houston, TX. The diary describes weather, training, letters received, and activities.
