Content Description

The collection consists of two stock certificates belonging to August Dahl for shares of the Farmers Educational and Co-Operative Union (Winner, S.D.) 1918 and the Ideal Telephone Company (Winner, S.D.) 1927. (Peter) August Dahl was born October 3, 1884 in Meckling, Dakota Territory to Peter and Carin (Jernberg) Dahl. August homesteaded in Tripp County near Ideal (S.D.). In 1922, the Dahl’s and surrounding families had telephones installed in their homes by the Ideal Telephone Company of Winner. The stock shows the Dahl’s financial connection with the company. A number of Farmers/Agricultural Cooperatives existed in South Dakota and the Farmers Educational and Co-Operative Union stock certificate documents the selling of shares to support cooperatives.
