Arthur Hargreaves Collection--World War I Diary
The collection consists of materials collected by Arthur Hargreaves of Armour (S.D.) during his military service in World War I. Of particular note is a diary he kept from June 15, 1918 to May 16, 1919. The diary gives brief accounts on train rides to basic training posts and travel through the United States, his trip across the Atlantic and arrival in England and France in August of 1918, arrival near the front lines on September 18 shortly after the Battle of Saint-Mihiel, fighting during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive until the end of the war in November 1918, and his return trip to South Dakota. Also included in the collection is a leather pouch that carried the diary and other materials, an address book of fellow soldiers, French currency, arm badges, and other miscellaneous papers.
