Ada L (Dwight) Keating Collection
Content Description
The collection consists of three photographs (one a tintype), family histories and pedigree charts of the Dwight and Owen families who settled in the DeSmet (S.D.) area in the 1880s. Samuel and Sarah (Hoyt) Owen came to DeSmet around 1880. The tintype image in the collection is of the Owen family listed as back: Sadie (Pond), Belle (Brown), Adda (Seelye), Vidiocy S.L. and front: Francis (Dwight), Samual, Newton, Sara and Sam Jr. V.S.L. Owen was a teacher and later went on to help establish several country schools in and around DeSmet in Kingsbury County; one of his teaching pupils was Laura Ingalls, documented in her Little Town on the Prairie book. Dan and Francis (Owen) Dwight arrived in DeSmet in April of 1882. The Dwight family photo from the 1900s lists back Frances, Sam B., Clarence, Ada L and front Homer, Frances Amerila, Vivian, Dan and Sadie. The third photo is of various Dwight family members and their spouses at a family reunion in 1905 back: Orpha (Dwight) Hendershott, Dave Hendershott, Dan Dwight, Sibly (McCann) Dwight, Charlie Dwight and front: Nancy (Ham) Dwight, Ralph Dwight, Lydia (Dwight) Rathbone and Henry Rathbone.
