John J. Hofer Collection--Emery (S.D.)
Content Description
The collection consists of twelve photographs from the Emery (S.D.) area. Most of the images are connected with John J. Hofer and his family including; Mr. Hofer’s farm and outbuildings located two miles east and two miles south of Emery in 1904, a photo reprint of Mr. Hofer in the Emery Meat Market in 1904, and the interior and exterior of Mr. Hofer’s furniture and undertaking business on main street in Emery from 1916 and 1917. Also included are three images of schoolchildren in front of the Emery Public and High School in 1917 and 1922. Joe Hofer, son of John Hofer is identified in one of the photographs and is seen in others. Joe Hofer is also identified in a 1921/1922 boys basketball team photo. Also in the collection are two photos of a large number of Emery businessmen taken on Emery’s main street September 11, 1934. Finally, two other images titled, “Ladies of Emery” show a number of well-dressed younger women in a group portrait. One of the photos has a caption identifying the women. Identified South Dakota photographers include Gerlach Bros (Marion, S.D.), Sobert Trad (Marion, S.D.) and H.B. Coleman (Bridgewater, S.D.).
