Content Description

The collection consists of correspondence, tax records, appraisals, news clippings, newsletters and photographs relating to artwork collected and donated by Irene Cordts of Faulkton (S.D.) to various institutions, including museums, libraries and historical societies throughout South Dakota. The materials date from 1971-2009. The paperwork is organized by the year in which the donations were made. Artists include Charles T. Greener of Faulkton (S.D.) and Rosebud Sioux Artist Reverend Godfrey Broken Rope, Verna Knott of Lebanon (S.D.), Virginia Coudron of Brookings (S.D.), Leonard Poor Bear, Alfredo Rodriquez, Wee Lee, Lorenzo Black Lance, Daniel Long Soldier, Peter Meyer, James Van Nuys, Charles Robert Cunningham, Norman Brown, Willard Ahenakew, James Earl Fraser, Eddie Two Bulls, Arthur Amiott, Joseph Fredel Broken Rope, Jake Herman, Louis Shipshee, Del Iron Cloud, Gwen G. Lesselyoung, Swift Hawk, Lawrence Bjorklund, and Alfred Picotte. Institutions receiving the donations were the SD Memorial Art Center (Brookings, S.D.), Faulk County Historical Society (Faulkton, S.D.), SD Cowboy and Western Heritage Hall of Fame (Fort Pierre, S.D.), Civic Fine Arts Association (Sioux Falls, S.D.), University of South Dakota and the University Art Galleries (Vermillion, S.D.), Dacotah Prairie Museum (Aberdeen, S.D.), South Dakota State Historical Society (Pierre, S.D.), Deadwood Public Library (Deadwood, S.D.), Crazy Horse Museum (Crazy Horse, S.D.), High Plains Heritage Center (Spearfish, S.D.), Friends of the Middle Boarder Museum (Mitchell, S.D.), the Center for Western Studies (Sioux Falls, S.D.), Presentation College (Aberdeen, S.D.), Cozard Memorial Library (Chamberlain, S.D.), South Dakota State University Foundation (Brookings, S.D.) St. Joseph’s Akta Lakota Museum (Chamberlain, S.D.), Buechel Memorial Lakota Museum (St. Francis, S.D.), and the Oscar Howe Art Center (Mitchell, S.D.). The collection also has a small amount of photographic images of certain artwork and artists listed above.
