Content Description
The collection consists of two scrapbooks with correspondence, news clippings and photographs concerning the South Dakota Bicentennial Commission in celebrating the American Revolution Bicentennial in 1976. Les Helgeland was chairman of the South Dakota Bicentennial Commission. The first scrapbook deals specifically with the Bicentennial Dakota Territorial Ball held in Yankton January 24, 1976. The scrapbook includes correspondence concerning the ball and images form the ball. Individuals in the scrapbook include Governor Richard and Nancy Kneip, Lt. Gov. Harvey Wollman, Dayton Canaday, a number of North Dakota Bicentennial officials, and individuals associated with the South Dakota Bicentennial Commission. The second scrapbook includes images form various South Dakota Bicentennial events including a dedication ceremony, at the approach to the South Dakota State Capitol building, of a time capsule placed by the commission on July 7, 1977 and a meeting at Valhalla in Custer State Park.
