America's Holiday Tree 1997
The collection consists of one three-ring binder with photographs, news clippings and programs documenting America’s Holiday Tree 1997. The scrapbook highlights the journey of the Black Hills spruce from South Dakota to Washington D.C. The cutting ceremony was held November 14 in Spearfish Canyon in the northern Black Hills. The sixty-foot spruce then went on a weeklong, fifteen stop tour of South Dakota cities before it’s placement on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The tree lighting ceremony was held December 10, 1997. South Dakota also provided the National Holiday Trees in 1955 and 1970. South Dakota artist John Crane produced a watercolor painting of the Holiday Tree in Spearfish Canyon. Proceeds from the painting were used for the Holiday Tree Committee's fund-raising efforts. Photos of Mr. Crane are included in the collection.
