Leander A Hogie papers
Content Description
This collection consists of photographs, commencement announcements, musical programs, and World War II ration stamps. Leander A. Hogie was born in 1915 in Astoria, South Dakota to A.J. and Ida Hogie. He graduated from Augustana in 1936. Leander first started teaching at Parker where he organized the first school band before moving to Parkston after just one school year. He was the School Superintendent for the Parkston school from 1942-1948. While in Parkston he supervised the ration booklets for the community during the war. He was a band director in Parker and Parkston, and also directed the choir programs. Ellen Johnston was born in 1919 in Hot Springs. She graduated from Carleton College in 1940 and started teaching in Eureka. She moved to Parkston in 1941 to teach piano, direct vocal groups and accompany musical groups. Leander married Ellen Johnston in 1943. The Hogie's moved to Elkton in 1948 and Leander became the Superintendent of Schools from 1948-1953. He also directed the music program and choir at this school. In 1953 the family moved to Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. Ellen died in 1981 and Leander moved to Sioux Falls where he passed away in 2007.
