The collection consists of Boys State staff and student rosters, publications, and photographs dating from 1967 to 1970. Marvin Jared was a staff member and counselor at Boys State. According to these records he was a council in 1967 through 1970. Also included are issues of the “Sunshine Scribe” the Boys State publication. Boys State is a nationwide program. South Dakota Boys State was founded at Aberdeen in 1940 and subsequent meetings were held in 1941 and 1942. World War II made it necessary to drop this activity, but in 1946 South Dakota Boys State was resumed. Marvin “Bud” Jared was born in Mitchell, SD on June 8, 1919 to Roy and Ruth (Hand) Jared. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and was a graduate of Mitchell High School and Dakota Wesleyan University. He received Masters Degrees in education and physics from the University of South Dakota. He was a teacher and superintendent in a number of South Dakota schools. He died on February 11, 2002.
