The collection mainly consists of tourism and promotional materials for the Black Hills of South Dakota distributed by the South Dakota State Highway Commission in 1950. The materials were mailed to individuals who contacted the state and requested information on the Black Hills. A number of places in the Black Hills area are mentioned, specifically the Badlands, Wonderland Cave (Sturgis, S.D.), Mount Rushmore National Memorial (S.D.), Stage Barn Crystal Caverns (Piedmont, S.D.), Deadwood (S.D.), Days of ’76 Parade, (Deadwood, S.D.) and Rushmore Cave (Keystone, S.D.). Other booklets provide further details on other Black Hills tourist destinations. Also included are a number of business cards as well as postcards. The collection contains fourteen loose postcards as well as two souvenir booklets of postcards for the Badlands and Black Hills, mainly on Iron Mountain Road and the Needles Highway. The loose postcard images include Crystal Cave (2), Needles Highway (4), Mount Rushmore (1), Sylvan Lake (1), the Badlands (2), greetings from the Black Hills (1), McColley Motor Court (Spearfish, S.D.)(1), Adams Museum (Deadwood, S.D.)(1) and a bird’s eye view of Deadwood (S.D.)(1). The original envelope for the items was also retained. Two other items, separate from the above materials, are also in this collection. The first is a postcard for the July 20-21, 1946 Black Hills Airfair held in Spearfish (S.D.). The postcard includes information on the airshow featuring various pilots and planes, U.S. Army jets, parachute jumps and other demonstrations. The final item is a Jackrabbit Bus Line schedule, effective September 1, 1932 for eastern South Dakota, southeastern North Dakota, southwestern Minnesota and northwest Iowa. The schedule includes a map showing the bus lines on one side, and on the reverse, town stops and ten different bus time tables for various bus lines. Also featured is an index of all the towns’ serviced by Jackrabbit bus lines.
