Content Description

The collection consists of four audio tapes to be listened to while traveling in a car, mainly along Interstates 29 and 90 in South Dakota. In the recording, the tapes are referred to as the “Tour Tape Series” narrated by Art Smith. The tapes allude to the series being available at various information centers throughout the state. The tapes begin at various mile markers along the interstate. The tapes offer various facts and history on towns and sites in South Dakota, mainly on or at a relatively short distance from the interstate. The main towns and locations emphasized in the tapes include Sisseton, Watertown, Brookings, Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Chamberlain, Wall, the Badlands, Rapid City and the Black Hills. A number of songs accompany the tapes, specifically a theme song for the state, “South Dakota: Come Feel Free Again,” as well as a theme song for Sioux Falls. It is not known, nor revealed in the tapes, if the “Tour Tape Series” was a project created through the Departments of Tourism or Highways. The tapes do state that Howard and Audrey Shaff produced the series. Both played prominent roles in various aspects of South Dakota’s tourism and visitor industry.
