Homestake Sawmill (Spearfish, S.D.)--Photographs
Content Description
The collection consists of thirty-seven black and white photos (with accompanying 35mm negatives) taken at the Homestake Mill in Spearfish (S.D). The Spearfish sawmill opened in November 1940. By 1954, the sawmill produced roughly 17 million board feet of lumber annually. A fire on February 19, 1980 destroyed the sawmill. Later that year, a west coast lumber company named “Pope and Talbot” purchased the sawmill and transformed it into a high-tech lumber milling plant. The date of the images is not given, but it is assumed that they date from the later days of the sawmill from either the 1970s or 1980s. The transferred photos originated from a collection of materials relating to the Edward Hines Mill Company of Chicago (IL). The photograph show various operations at the sawmill. The images run from piles of uncut logs to completed lumber material including both external and internal operations; showing the lumber milling process from start to finish.
