Content Description

The collection consists of three (3 ½ x 3) images showing construction of the Federal Building in Pierre (S.D.). The images show early construction with the framework of the first floor complete while work was beginning on the second floor. Dedicated on November 5, 1965 the three million dollar Federal Building stands at the northwest corner of Pierre Street and Sioux Avenue. Black granite from Pennsylvania adorns the exterior of the upper floors and Minnesota quarries supplied the multi-colored granite for the first floor exterior. South Dakota Senator Francis Case added the project as part of the 1960 Public Works Committee bill. A post office was on the first floor, federal offices were on the second and third floor and the federal court was located on the fourth floor. When opened the building employed 180 federal employees.
