Content Description

The collection consists mainly of maps of the United States from 1953, the northern Great Plains area in 1879 and Artas (S.D.) from the 1930s and 1983. The Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management map shows the United States, Territories and insular possessions as of 1953. It also shows National Parks, National Forests, Indian Reservations, National Wildlife Refuges and Reclamation Projects. As well as showing the South Dakota Indian Reservations, the map also shows three South Dakota reclamation projects including the Belle Fourche, Rapid Valley and Angostura projects. The two maps measure 43” x 64”. Another map is a photocopy titled “Gotha: Justus Perthes” dated 1879 of the northern Great Plains and Midwest showing Dakota Territory. The Justus Perthes Publishing Company printed out of Gotha, Germany. The map shows towns, forts, rail lines and rivers as well as various political boundaries measuring 22”x 29 ½”. Two additional maps are of Artas (S.D.) in Campbell County. The first dates to the early 1930s showing the railway, depot and elevators as well as the plat of the town. The second Artas map, published by the SD Department of Transportation dates to 1983 and also shows the town plat as well as various highways and roads. Also donated is a small reel-to-reel audio tape, presumably of an interview done in the 1970s of some early history of Forestburg (S.D.). A title on the box reads, “Old Timers Interview.” It is not known what is on the audio tape and the State Archives does not currently have equipment to hear it. The collection also includes a booklet from the South Dakota Democratic Party Convention held in Huron, July 14-15, 1968. The booklet was added to the Vertical File under “Democratic Party.”
