Cheyenne River Agency Cemetery

 Unprocessed — Box: 03767 C
Identifier: H2009-078

Content Description

The collection consists of two black and white photographs of a cemetery on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. The donor’s mother took the images in July of 1945 while visiting the area. One image shows a number of headstones with the Missouri River in the background. The other image has a large cross featuring a figure of Jesus Christ at his crucifixion. With the construction of the Oahe Dam in the 1950s, a number of cemeteries on the Cheyenne River Reservation would be inundated as a result of the dam. Removal and reburial of the bodies in cemeteries commenced. It is difficult to ascertain with any certainty which cemetery (or cemeteries) are represented in these photos.
