The collection consists of one book titled, “Looking For Grass and Water,” a memoire of Kenneth Halligan. Born into an Irish family at Cedar Butte (S.D.) in Mellette County, Kenneth Halligan continued the tradition of his Irish family in raising cattle and horses. The book features a collection of memories from Kenneth’s life from his early days and family at Cedar Butte and Parmelee (S.D.), the Great Depression, ranch life, World War II in the Pacific, his brief time working as a telephone man, his marriage to Ruth Verch in 1947, working on the Rankin Ranch in Stanley County before moving on and ranching on the White River south of Draper (S.D.). The Irish in South Dakota Collection will be an open collection and will consist of future donations relating to Irish families in South Dakota. Box 4932B will be used specifically for future Irish in South Dakota collections.
