Center of North America marker (Pierre, S.D.)--M. J. Pierson

 Unprocessed — Box: 8535 A
Identifier: H2001-016

Content Description

This collection consists of one black and white 3x5 photograph. The image is of M.J. Pierson standing with his foot resting on the center of North America marker. The following was written on the reverse: "Near Pierre, South Dakota. My foot is on cement block that has copper plate put in same by U.S. Geodetic Survey that reads “Center.” S.D. strongly lays claim that this is geographic center of the North America Continent. (Not to be confused with “Center” of USA.) North Dakota claims are null and void so say S.D. A new Hi-way ‘Y’ or road being built to circle this spot will lead to Dam on Missouri River some 2 or 3 miles away-Shaft in back being wrecked and more imposing marker to be built. M. J. Pierson"
