Content Description

The collection consists of five photographs from the Pierre and Fort Pierre area. Two postcards are of the “Days of ’81 Parade” in Pierre on June 1, 1931. The two images show an ox drawn cart, with the State Capitol in the background and a number of Native Americans on Pierre Street. Both images are Miller Studio photos. Another postcard shows fire running through the top floor of the Fort Pierre Public School building. The fire occurred in November of 1940. A fourth photo shows flooding in Fort Pierre from the Bad River, dating to 1927. The final photo shows the construction of a railroad bridge across a river. It is believed that this is not the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad bridge in Pierre. The photo shows differences in construction, particularly the bridge piers. Further research was unable to determine what bridge this is and if it is even a South Dakota bridge.
