John H. Firey Collection
Content Description
The collection consists of papers and correspondence of John H. Firey. John Firey was born on November 13, 1859 in Grove City, IL. Firey came to South Dakota in 1882 and settled in Aberdeen. He became one of the organizers and incorporators of the Jewett Drug Company, a retail drug business, in 1903. Firey purchased the north half of the Excelsior Block in 1907 and became proprietor of the St. Nicholas Hotel. The building was torn down in 1937. The papers include invoices and correspondence on land transactions, insurance, merchandise, and books. The merchandise correspondence, it is assumed, is dealing mainly with the upkeep of the St. Nicholas Hotel. There are also a number of letters referring to Firey as a T.I.A. or Traveling Immigration Agent for the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railway.
