The collection consists of approximately one hundred and eighty-five (185) letters written by two brothers, Leroy and Barney Barnhart to their mother Mina Barnhart of Rapid City, SD. The letters cover the time period from 1942 to 1946. A majority of the letters were written by Leroy. Leroy’s letters date from 1942 to 1946. Leroy wrote one hundred and twenty four letters to his mother from various locations including: Camp Robinson – Arkansas, Army Administration School – Washington, Pennsylvania, Fort McClellan – Alabama, Camp Carson – Colorado, Shreveport, Louisiana, Camp Roberts – California, Camp Butner – North Carolina, somewhere in France, somewhere in Germany, Rouen France, and Linz Austria. Barney’s letters date from 1942 to 1945. Barney wrote sixty letters to his mother from various locations including: March Field, California, India, Romulus, Michigan, and Sioux Falls, SD Army Air Field. The letters were purchased by the donor from Sandy Barnhart, daughter of Leroy Barnhart. Leroy died in April of 1999 and Barney died in June of 1999. Both are buried at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.
