Content Description

The collection consists of twenty-eight, black and white, snapshot photographs of tornado damage in and around the town of Burke (S.D.) from August 1, 1954. The photographs were taken by Rosebud Photo of Winner (S.D.). The twenty-eight images show various scenes of tornado damage and two photographs of the tornado itself. Photographs include tree damage, home/dwelling debris, wrecked homes and automobiles, snapped power poles, a view of a gas station, tipped railroad cards and grass tied up along a fence line. The tornado cut a 15-mile path of destruction running through south Burke and Gregory County on a Sunday afternoon between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. Newspaper reports from The Burke Gazette in early August of 1954 (microfilm reel #240) give various accounts of the damage and include photographs of the scene. Some of the photos in this collection correspond with images from the newspaper and are credited to Rosebud Photo (Winner, S.D.). The collection includes an envelope that reads, “Burke, So. Dak. Tornado, August 1, 1954.” The back reads “Rosebud Photo | Winner, So. Dak.”
