Content Description

The collection consists of one document (14 ½” x 16 ½”) of a Sioux Land Certificate concerning land allocated to Bear’s Foot (Mato-si) on the Rosebud Agency, dated 1885. The certificate states that the initial land agreement was part of the Treaty of 1868. The certificate allotted land to Bear’s Foot on the Rosebud Reservation for farming, consisting of 320 acres. The document also provides the description of the tract of land near the Niobrara River. The back of the certificate reads, “Recorded this 15th day of May, 1885, in the Sioux Land Tract Book Volume 1, page 4 at Rosebud Agency, James G. Wright, U. S. Indian Agency.” Also written in long hand is, “I hereby relinquish all my right, title and interest in the within ascribed land to C. W. Stacy and J. S. Roupe.” The writing is dated August 9, 1890 and signed, with an X, by Bear’s Foot and witnessed by W. P. Lassurll. Thus, the document shows the tract of land received by Bear’s Foot in 1885 and the subsequent transfer of that land to Stacy and Roupe in 1890.
