The collection consists of materials created by Roy and Edith Norman on the location of early Indian and Military trails and mail routes in western Dakota Territory/South Dakota, mainly comprising (but not limited to) the area of “Old Stanley County” including the present day counties of Stanley, Haakon, Jones and Jackson. Through their efforts, an extensive number of trail signs, still visible today, were placed along various trail locations, helping to insure the trails history for future generations. This collection includes maps created by the Normans in documenting historic trails, roads, postal routes, military forts and stage stops. Some of the specific trails included in the collection are the Bad River Road, Fort Bennett to Fort Laramie Military Road, Cheyenne to Rosebud Agency Road, Leslie/Cherry Creek to Spotted Tail Agency Trail, Bridger-Big Foote to Pine Ridge Agency Trail, Fort Pierre to Deadwood Trail, Chamberlain to Rapid City Road, Fort Pierre to Rosebud Trail and Lower Brule/Red Cloud Agency to Rosebud/Spotted Tail Trail.
