Content Description

The collection consists of twenty-seven photographs of high school students taken at Sorum (S.D.), Perkins County, from roughly 1938 to 1941. Various scenes include: school shop, view of the land around Sorum, sheep wagons, water system, school house, Sorum flour mill/dormitory, Bellamy Salute, Sorum High School band (in uniforms), glee club, girls dormitory, home economics group, 1941 graduates, Superintendent Haskell, Sorum Hot Shots (band), chemistry students, library, daily mail trucks, high school cow sheds, student dwellings, school kitchen, students on horses, basketball team, students playing basketball, NYA workers and building construction/shop class. The photos show a number of scenes of students participating in the National Youth Administration (NYA). The NYA was a New Deal project in the 1930s that promoted work and education for American youth. On the back of some of the photos is written, “Leonard Haskell, Sorum, South Dakota” Mr. Haskell was Superintendent of the Sorum High School. Index cards and captions accompany each photograph. Printouts with some history on Sorum were also placed with the collection.
