The collection consists of four letters addressed to Dr. George H. Phillips, three from South Dakota United States Government Senators and a Representative, concerning a proposed Dakota Territory Centennial commemorative stamp in 1961. Dr. Phillips was head of the printing and journalism department at South Dakota State University in Brookings in 1961. The correspondence, all dated to March of 1961, is from South Dakota Senators Francis Case and Karl Mundt and Representative Ben Reifel as well as a letter from North Dakota Senator Milton R. Young. The correspondence highlights the efforts to propose a commemorative stamp to the United States Post Office Department. In the end, the proposal for a Dakota Territory commemorative stamp was rejected.
