Content Description

The collection consists of brochures and other literature concerning the opening of homestead land on the Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Reservations in October of 1909. According to one of the brochures, the land was open for settlement from October 4 to 23, 1909. There was over 2,800,000 acres of land available comprising over nine thousand farms of 160 acres. Pierre and Aberdeen were the two towns were people could register for the land. The collection includes a South Dakota Department of Immigration brochure from 1907 promoting the state; two Chicago and North Western Railroad brochures promoting the opening of the reservation lands; one time-table for the Chicago and North Western railroad; a government pamphlet titled, “Information relative to Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Indian Lands” dated August 21, 1909; and one sheet titled, “Government Homesteads.”
