Spotted Tail Papers
Content Description
The collection consists of fourteen documents and one photograph copy concerning Chief Spotted Tail. The photocopied items range in date from the 1860s to 1880s.The items mainly concern correspondence sent to Spotted Tail by various individuals, but also include discharge papers and certificates of service. Spotted Tail was a Brule Lakota chief. Although a great warrior in his youth, he had become convinced of the futility of opposing the white incursions into his homeland; he became a statesman, speaking for peace and defending the rights of his tribe. He was one of the leaders who signed the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868, designed to bring peace between the whites and the Sioux who agreed to settle within the Black Hills reservation in the Dakota Territory. Various legal documents concerning the collection were kept in the collections accession file.
