Content Description

The collection consists of photographs and other records relating to the military service of Gerald “Jeff” Martinmaas during World War II. Gerald was born March 18, 1926 to Werner and Mary (Schaefers) Martinmaas at Faulkton. He grew up near the Polo area marrying Elfrieda Haneke on August 24, 1949. According to captions on his military photos, Gerald entered military service on January 17, 1945 and served with the Japan Occupation Army after the end of World War II beginning in October 1945. He was a Private first class stationed in Yokohama (Japan) and returned to the states in October of 1946. A number of “snapshot” photos are included of Gerald and other servicemen stationed in Japan. He was a member of the American Legion Post 229 of Polo and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3214 of Miller. The collection includes a number of membership cards for both organizations from the 1990s and a “25 Years of Membership” certificate from the American Legion from 1971. He died November 9, 1996 in Aberdeen (S.D.) and was buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Polo.
