Content Description

The collection consists of one oversized charcoal portrait, two color portraits of children, and four additional photographs concerning William Cundiff of Pukwana (S.D.). William Cundiff was born in Hanover, IL on August 5, 1877. He came to South Dakota in the late 1890s, having filed for a homestead claim in Brule County, Union Township. He would later live in Pukwana. He married Margaret Smith of Drakesboro (KY) on June 27, 1907. They had two daughters Thelma (1908) and Elsie (1910). The images in the collection roughly date from the 1900s to 1920s. The charcoal portrait was created using a wedding photo (also in this collection) of William and Maggie Cundiff. The image measures 16 by 20 inches and shows a portrait image of the Cundiffs. The two oval portraits are of their children Thelma and Elsie. One portrait is of Elsie and the other is the two girls together, both would date to around the mid-1910s. Other loose images include tornado damage to a house in Pukwana from the late 1920s to early 1930s, a postcard of the Corn Palace in Mitchell from 1927, a Pukwana home listed as the “Shransky’s Home” and the Cundiff’s wedding photo from 1907. The collection is an accretion to H2015-046.
