Content Description

The collection consists of photographs, postcards, scrapbook pages and news clippings concerning the Walker family of Clay County. Thomas R. and Sarah Walker came to Dakota Territory in 1886, purchasing a quarter section of land located southeast of Vermillion (S.D.) in Clay County. The Walker’s had eight children: Ward, Warren, Agnes, Alice, Marguerite, Jennie, Gertrude and Ruth. The Walker Farm would become one of the largest diversified farms in South Dakota, consisting of 3,300 acres of land in 1940. The family also built a home in Vermillion in the early 1900s located at 215 Forest Avenue. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Agnes, the oldest daughter, is identified in a number of images. A write up on Agnes’ life was written by her son Richard Sherman and is included with the collection. The images include a portrait photo of the family taken by the Butler photo studio in Vermillion, two images of the Walker home in Vermillion and various family and farm photographs. The collection is an accretion to H2015-042.
