Content Description

The collection consists of one photograph of John Edward Swanson, standing at attention in uniform, taken before he left to serve in the First World War. The photo measures 2 ½” x 4 ½”. The back of the photo reads, “John Edward Swanson, World War I, Field Artillery, Harrold, So. Dak.” John Edward Swanson was born April 17, 1896 to Nels G. and Martha (Funell) Swanson in Beresford (S.D.). The family later moved to Hughes County and farmed on section 13 of Bretton Township. Swanson was a private in the United States Army having served from December of 1917 to June of 1919. He would later move to Montana and become a rancher. He died on January 12, 1965 and is buried at the Custer Battlefield National Cemetery, Crow Agency (MT).
