Content Description
The collection consists of one photograph of an interior view of the First State Bank of Ashton (Ashton, S.D.). Calendars on the back wall of the bank show that the image was taken in January of 1908. The bank teller, Wilbert Emery Cole (1862-1947), stands at the far right of the image. Mr. Cole came to South Dakota in 1891, working as a telegrapher in Orient (S.D.) for the Milwaukee Road. Mr. Cole began working at the bank in Ashton in 1906. The image was taken behind the bank counter and shows the bank safe door, tables, a calculating machine and a cast iron stove. The walls, with decorative wallpaper, are covered with various advertisements and calendars. The emulsion layer of the image is damaged in spots. There is no photographer name or mark which accompanies the image.
