Content Description

The collection consists of twenty-two business trading cards (2 ½ x 3 ½ inches) listing individual merchants from Mellette (S.D.) from the 1900s. Seven businesses are represented on the cards including J.A. Musch jeweler, John Oberle blacksmith, Farmer’s Restaurant—S. Golding proprietor, Hollandsworth-Hart Lumber Company, B.W. Cole farm machinery, Gange Brothers livery and Jason Neiderauer hardware. The top of the card includes the business name. The middle section includes a list of various items sold and a sentence promoting their trade. “Mellette, S.D.” is on the bottom of each card, there is nothing printed on the back. The cards promoted various businesses in the community. Research by the donor presumes that the cards date to between 1904 and 1909. All merchants were listed in the 1904, R. G. Dun & Company business directory and only three of the merchants were still operating according to the Gazetteer Publishing Company directory for 1909.
