Content Description

The collection consists of three items concerning activities in the city of Chamberlain from 1900 to 1902. The first is a pink catalogue titled, “Chamberlain City School” dated September 1900. The catalogue includes local business advertisements, list of school board members, school rules and regulations, courses of study and textbooks used. The Missouri Valley Journal of Chamberlain published the catalogue. A second item is a graduation announcement for the Chamberlain High School class of 1902. Graduation was May 23, 1902 at the Chamberlain Opera House. The announcement includes the program, list of graduates and the class motto. J. D, Doderer is listed as the city superintendent. Finally, an invitation via a small card with accompanying small red bag to the M. E. Church (Chamberlain, S.D.) for a meeting of the Epworth League on April 4, 1902. The Epworth League was a Methodist young adult association. The collection also contained one color-tinted postcard of the Corn Palace in Mitchell (S.D.). In comparing to similar Corn Palace images, it is believed that the postcard dates to 1926. The postcard, with caption, includes text on the costs to decorate the Corn Palace and a greeting from the Mitchell Chamber of Commerce Secretary, W. H. King. [Accretion 9/28/2018]: An additional item was later donated, being a Royal Neighbors of America card listing Gate City Camp No. 2473, Chamberlain (S.D.), May 17, 1901. The card includes a recipe for a “Scripture Cake,” i.e. Fruit Cake, with specific ingredients found in various bible verses.
