Content Description

The collection consists of one photograph (4 x 9 ½ inches) of the Klatt family farm located near Hazel (S.D.) from the 1910s. The photograph features the Klatt’s with their four children with their home and other farm buildings in the background. According to the 1905 South Dakota State Census and a 1929 atlas of Codington County, the Klatt family lived in Codington County, Kampeska Township, at Township 116N Range 54W in Section 33. The southern border of this section is the border between Hamlin and Codington counties. According to paperwork from the original donation, “Julius and Olga Klatt had four children. Olga died while driving the team of horses pulling her buggy after a heavy rain. They believe the horses were “spooked” and threw the buggy. It tipped over on top of Olga and pinned her to the ground where she drowned. Julius married his second wife, Minnie. They had ten more children.” The photo was transferred from the Mower County Historical Society (Austin, MN). The photograph was donated to the Mower County Historical Society in 1992 as part of the Judd Photography Studio (Austin, MN) photo collection.
