Adelia and Charlotte Dawes—Memorial/Funeral Card, 1911
The collection consists of one 4 x 6 ½ inch memorial/funeral card for two sisters, Adelia and Charlotte Dawes who died January 21 and 22, 1911. According to an account from the Springfield newspaper of January 21, 1911 a tragic accident occurred when a five gallon can of gasoline, in the hands of Adelia, exploded killing the two Dawes children Adelia and Charlotte. Two other girls in the home Vera Brown and a girl whose last name was Crosley also died. The fire occurred at the Dawes home when the girls were making candy. The memorial/funeral card includes biographical information on both Adelia and Charlotte. Adelia L. Dawes was born May 18, 1897 and died on January 22, 1911 age 13 years, 8 months and 4 days. Charlotte Dawes was born December 9, 1901 and died January 21, 1911 age 9 years, 1 month and 12 days. According to the 1905 South Dakota State Census, the girl’s parents were George and Hattie Dawes. They had three older siblings Frank, Freddie and Jesse.
